Situated just south of the equator a large central plateau makes up most of mainland Tanzania, with the mountain ranges of the Eastern Arc and the Southern and Northern Highlands cutting across the country to form part of the Great Rift Valley. One of the oldest and most continuously inhabited areas on Earth Tanzania is also regarded as one of the most politically stable and safest countries on the African continent.
From the savannaha plains of the Serengeti to the Indian Ocean Tanzania is a land of geographical extremes. With its highest peak, the snow-capped summit of Kilimanjaro, or ‘mountain of the springs’, the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world, to its lowest point, the bed of Lake Tanganyika, few destinations in Africa can compete with Tanzania’s contrasts and majesty, its diversity of wildlife and landscapes. Untouched rainforests, savannahs and swamps, waterfalls and lakes, beautiful beaches, warm, open and friendly people, fascinating cultures steeped in history and an incredible, diverse beauty that reaches deep inside your soul.
Tanzania is home to World Heritage sites, iconic wildlife, national parks, a vast array of coastal and marine ecosystems, estuaries and reefs and globally endangered and threatened species, including the black rhinoceros, chimpanzee, African elephant and cheetah. The land boasts over a thousand species of birds, nine Endemic Bird Areas and a rich diversity of marine life including manta rays, dolphins, sea turtles and the largest known extant fish species, the whale shark. Endowed with an abundance of natural resources Tanzania has prioritised the protection of its rich biodiversity, with over 40% of the land and sea mass protected in some way leaving no doubt of Tanzanzia’s significance within the global conservation arena.
It is so hard to put into words quite how beautiful Tanzania is, the magnificent sunrises and sunsets, the sounds of the birds and wild animals, the colour and animation of the towns and cities, the freshly made food, the wonderful, open and welcoming people, full of history, culture, music and breathtaking scenery Tanzania really is the beating heart of Africa.
